Come Join the Michigan Progressive Party: A Voice for Change on MSA

*Please remember: I'm located at www.foxformsa.blog.com*

If you have ever wanted to do something about the problems at the university, now is your chance. The MPP will be running a full slate in the upcoming Michigan Student Assembly elections and we need the best candidates to voice an active platform for change. If you have ever considered working for student interests now is your shot. The MPP is actively developing a platform that carefully addresses a wide array of student issues, from textbook prices to campus safety. If there is any issue on campus that you are passionate about, MSA and LSA-SG are two underutilized organizations to achieve change.

Centralized Hate Crimes & Bias Incidents Hotline Goes Live

Dear Student Leaders:

My office and several other university offices have been working
diligently since last term on the infrastructure for the University's
centralized hotline for reporting hate crimes and bias incidents. I am
sending you this brief note to inform you that the line will be live on
Wednesday, February 1. The number is 734-615-BIAS (2427). I will be
sending an announcement about the hotline and other U-M efforts to the
entire campus community later this week.

In the meantime, please refer to the "Student Matters" website
(http://www.umich.edu/~ovpsa/studentmatters/bias.html) for information
on how to react to and report hate crimes and bias incidents.

If you have questions about this, please contact me at 764-7420 or
smeklund@umich.edu.

Get the UM Alumni Club Chair to STOP the Largest Cut to Student Aid in HISTORY!

CALL SCHWARZ *NOW*!!! 202-225-6276 CALL SCHWARZ *NOW*!!!
202-225-6276 CALL SCHWARZ *NOW*!!! 202-225-6276

Hi, all,

So, this is pretty dire. TODAY in a FEW HOURS is the day we find out if student aid gets slashed.

We NEED to stop the largest cut to student aid in HISTORY, $12.7 billion in permanent cuts that help students afford college. These cuts would affect 240,000 students in the State of Michigan ALONE and 70% of students at good ole University of Michigan. The estimate is that these cuts will cost the average student borrower over $4,000! Do you have an extra $4,000 hanging around? I sure don't! (Go to studentaidaction.com for more info, or read this story from the Battle Creek Inquirer featuring Umich student Rachel Chapin and talking about student aid cuts, but make sure to CALL SCHWARZ 202-225-6276).

The University of Michigan Alumni Club Chair, Joe Schwarz, is a US Congressman and has voted to protect college affordability when he was a state legislator in Michigan. It all changed in November when he voted for the largest cuts to student aid. The vote passed by TWO, meaning that if Umich students would have called him and gotten him to change his mind the budget wouldn't have gotten a majority and would have failed.

Now both the House and Senate need to reconcile differences in their proposed budget, so we have ONE MORE CHANCE to stop the raid on student aid! PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE take one minute to call Congressman Schwarz's office.

Schwarz's office number is 202-225-6276. Yea, democracy ... fight for an affordable education!

Here is an example of what you can say:

“The Senate recently passed a budget reconciliation bill that would cut $13 billion from federal student aid programs. Since you are the Chair of the U of M Alumni Association and should be in favor of student financial aid, I am calling on you to vote NO on this budget bill that will be up for a vote on February First.”

His office number, again, is 202-225-6276.

Thanks, again, for your efforts!
