The Safety Scapegoat

At the Public Hearing on the proposed lease signing ordinance, many landlords stepped up to the podium with concerns about safety of students if lease signing were prohibited within the first three months of the current lease. They argued that this ordinance would cause students to subvert the system and try to go into apartments and homes on unscheduled, unsupervised tours. In reality, students know this already happens and don't think that the ordinance would substantially change this practice. Yet, we wondered, are there any other reasons that students could be encouraged to use this unorthodox style of apartment hunting besides a closed window for lease signing? Students for PIRGIM's Shari Pomerantz pointed out a select few landlords who didn't have any scruples with suggesting or not discouraging potential tenants to walk up to doors with an unscheduled looksee. So much for "concerns for student safety"...

Oppenheimer Properties, INC

How do I get inside one of Oppenheimer’s houses?

  1. The traditional approach:
You can call us to set up an appointment and Todd or Howard will meet you at the house. We need at least 24 hours to give the current tenants notice we are coming over.
  2. The spontaneous approach:
It is a long tradition at U of M that students find their own ways inside houses that they are interested in seeing. We don't encourage this method but we can't stop it either.

Campus Rentals

To View the Units

You may visit any of the listed units. Don't be embarrassed. Just go to the door and knock. Most students find their place this way every year, but we do ask that you be considerate of the tenants and their schedules.

Viewing Tip: Look beyond the housekeeping practices of the present busy occupants. Check out the layout. Then use your imagination to see yourself and your friends living with your things around you.

If there's no one home when you go to look, or if you would prefer to have a Campus Rentals representative show you through, feel free to contact us at the office. We'll be glad to arrange for you to see it.

Campus Management Inc.

Viewing a Campus Management, Inc. House or apartment

We strongly encourage every prospective tenant to view a unit before proceeding with a rental. Many people prefer to view apartments and houses by going out on their own. However, Campus Management, Inc. can assist you with this process. We employ a full time rental agent who is available to meet with you and insure that you get through each unit and answer all of your questions. In any event, respect for the current resident's right to notification and privacy is paramount to us. If you chose to go on your own and are unable to gain entry please contact us so that we can assist you in this process. If, from the outset, you prefer to have an appointment please call us and we'll arrange to notify the current resident and meet you at a time of your choosing.

AirBus Website!

Hi, all,

One thing you all might not know about MSA is that our front office staff is pretty darn amazing. They put up with reps and students alike asking really silly questions or giving them grief for things they can't control, but they still do a great job day after day. Josh Kersey, one of MSA's front office staff members, just sent me a link to AirBus's new site.

www.msa.umich.edu/airbus

Check it out! Thanks, Josh!

Feedback on Resolutions

Hi, all,

I JUST figured out how to do this (maybe ... let's see if it works ...). Here are pending resolutions to be voted on this coming Tuesday. The first resolution addresses MSA follow-up on internal spending to make sure we aren't breaking any rules (making MSA have a mini-SOAS-equivalent body that checks receipts and budgets just like student orgs' receipts and budgets are checked). The second resolution recognizes that politically active student organizations should be able to be funded by MSA. They both will be revised a lot over the weekend, so please give me your feedback!

Thanks,

Rese

PS: Let me know how the resolution downloading goes. I think you *may* have to log on to the umich system with your uniqname and password ... I will try to figure out how to get rid of that so that more people can access the documents. Also, right now you'll see an "unsupported MIME type" message, but you can still access the documents, I think. You'll have to click "download" and place the files on your computer. When I learn how to post them to a webpage I'll start doing that. Also, thoughts on pdf files versus Word documents? Since Adobe's added the wonderful search feature I've been quite fond of pdf files, but please let me know any reasons that I should post with Word.

MSA Safewalk Tuesday after the Meeting

Hi, all,

MSA is holding a safewalk after the meeting on Tuesday. We will walk around student neighborhoods to determine what places do or do not feel safe at night. Feel free to join us! We'll meet in Chambers after the meeting then break up into three groups to target different student neighborhoods. We'll supply the flashlights. This will be a fun way for MSA to get to know each other and for you to get to know MSA!

Thanks,

Rese

Blog.com ... How Nice! Thank you!

Hi, all,

The folks at blog.com referenced my blog on their official blog, http://our.blog.com/ (whoo, did that make sense?). They recognized fox4msa.blog.com because it was referenced by traditional media (the Michigan Daily). Thanks for the coverage, blog.com! You can read their post here: http://our.blog.com/487585/#cmts

No MSA Meeting Today (1.17)

Hi, all,

There is no MSA meeting today because we only hold MSA meetings during weeks when we have five days of class. I hope everyone enjoyed MLK Day! In lieu of the MSA meeting, MSA is having a retreat for all execs, representatives, and commission co-chairs to discuss goals for the upcoming semester. If you have any ideas please let us know! Email msa.everyone@umich.edu.

Thanks!
