Thank You for Your Support and Votes . . . Now We Wait . . .

Dear Friends,

This campaign process has been a phenominal experience. No matter what happens, thanks for giving me the opportunity to run by supporting me and becoming educated on the issues surrounding students and MSA's ability to positively affect them. If you are interested in learning about how to participate in MSA without actually being a current rep (committees and commissions are excellent options) or if you are interested in running winter term and want my take on things, please contact me. Thanks, again!

PS: Tentative results of the elections will be heard around noon on Friday and on Saturday official results will be released.

The Daily

Dear Friends,

The Daily's press coverage has been less than agreeable for the past two days:

Today

A very disappointing LTE from former MSA President Matt Nolan (2001-02) who I feel truly has an overly pessimistic view on the power of students . . .  http://www.michigandaily.com/vnews/display.v/ART/2004/11/18/419c8fe649912

. . . And a wonderful response from Ann Arbor is Overrated and the very nice comment that Murph from Arbor Update posted : ) Thanks, Murph! : http://www.annarborisoverrated.com/

Yesterday

Here is a story the Daily had written on elections which we at the Students 4 Michigan Party aren't too happy about: http://www.michigandaily.com/vnews/display.v/ART/2004/11/17/419b3b5f674b9?in_archive=1

And here are two LTEs in response that the Daily decided not to print, the first by fellow runningmate Katie Grossman and the second written by me (perhaps they would have considered it if I would have been more succinct):

Justin Miller's article "Polls open for two-day MSA elections" discusses the now-upon-us Student Government elections, and gives Independent candidates the opportunity for their voices to be heard.  While I find it extremely valuable for our student body to hear all sides in this election, I take issue with the fact that much of what was said Students 4 Michigan is untrue.  As a member of the Students 4 Michigan party running for LSA-SG in these elections I can say with pride and dignity that my fellow candidates and I have worked extremely hard over these past two weeks putting together strong candidacies and reaching out to the students.  I also know that each candidate has spent hours on end making those ideas heard by sending e-mails, talking to students in the residence halls and on the diag, updating our currently-running website – the list goes on.  Each candidate in Students 4 Michigan is independently motivated by his or her desire to make the changes they want to see happen – so much, in fact, that it is that principle that this party was founded on.  Contrary to the article, Students 4 Michigan is comprised of "accessible, approachable, and accountable" students, each with his or her own aspirations.  The article deems the formation process as "selective": selective in the sense that party founders seek out students to fit a role, completely false; selective in the sense that such an outpouring of support and motivation showed its face that deciding which candidates were most qualified and best represent what the party stands for, absolutely.  No "catering to demands" has taken place and there has been no forming platforms based on what someone has told us to say.  All of this, though, would have been extremely clear if one had taken the time to listen to all 26 of our candidates, to read the numerous bright blue flyers, or to visit our detailed website.

--Katie Grossman, LSA sophomore; candidate for LSA-SG with Students 4 Michigan

To the Michigan Daily,

I was very upset with the article "Polls open for two-day MSA elections." I applaud your desire to represent independent candidates along with Students 4 Michigan and the Defend Affirmative Action Party. The Daily is a major information source for all students and it should examine a story from many facets to encourage educated voting. That being said, while it is important to hear the opinions of individuals within the story or issue, it is a huge oversight to not speak with adversaries to make sure those opinions are not misleading. This did not happen in this article. I was extremely disappointed that the Daily allowed Independent Mike Forster to say that Students 4 Michigan's campaign supplies "minimal information" and that he conversely is
"reaching out" without offering Students 4 Michigan to respond to that comment, implying that the Students 4 Michigan campaign is not working to inform and access students. To allow such blatant untruths to be stated or implied without challenging them is intolerable. The Daily, in effect, inaccurately qualified his statements by not consulting Students 4 Michigan and by not learning about our campaign strategy.

I pride myself in being a part of a party that is working to promote our candidates and platform in various ways. Forster does mention that we are chalking and posting, but we are doing much more than that and reaching far more constituents that way. When we post flyers we meet new students and talk one-on-one to get to know their concerns. As a party we have also decided to campaign door-to-door in residence halls, a choice that takes more time out of our schedules but is truly more effective in learning about constituent concerns and in making sure students understand our goals and qualifications. We supplement these personal conversations with a website that hosts a plethora of candidate bios and goals and the party platform (www.votes4m.com). This website is also a tool to reach students who we don't meet personally, and we have been promoting it through flyers, quartersheets and chalking. I, too, have my own blog site for the election with a large amount of information on me and my priorities (http://fox4msa.blog.com) in which anyone can post any concerns and feedback, whether it is positive or negative. We also have used e-mail and the Facebook to reach students with our platform.

Finally, the comment that Students 4 Michigan "caters to demands" of others in the party is false. Our party offers an effective forum for revision and enhancement of ideas and goals. We did not include any plank in our platform that would be burdensome for our candidates to support. The next time you choose to cover any topic with multiple stakeholders, please consider all sides. While it is important to give many students the opportunity to express their views, it is also the duty of a news publication to make sure that these views are qualified and that coverage is well-rounded.

Sincerely,

Rese Fox
